The city of Caso is at a crossroads. Guild-led mercantilism and industry have raised the city to renown. But flourishing trade has led to flourishing greed—even attracting the attention of the distant Careyago Emperor. The eight guilds and their Patzau leaders struggle against circumstances and each other as the richest city in the world grapples with its ever-shrinking reserves and the darker underlying secrets keeping it all afloat.

Born of the Casoyan mountain tribes, cousins Yoharum and Kuta live in two different worlds. Separated as children, Kuta is the first Aginjigaade sorcerer her people have produced in generations, while Yoharum—deprived and vengeful—has turned to crime. Both have returned to Caso, but while Kuta searches for clues to solve her adopted mother’s murder, Yoharum plots a murder of his own.

Twins at birth, adversaries as adults—Kida and Yuromi Ashill were born to one of the oldest and most prestigious families in Caso. Their mother, Patzau Ashill, sits on the council of eight and leads the city’s soldiers. But as tensions with the criminal gangs hiding in the slums of Mudtown escalates, the twins have different friends with different agendas.

Meanwhile, exiled Prince Ohacha is caught between two uncles: one who would see him crowned, and another who would see him dead. Hunted by the traitor Bartiin, who now leads the Careyago Empire’s assassins, Ohacha flees to Caso. His goal is simple: refill his family’s coffers and return home with an army of reclaiming his ancestral throne. But Caso is a city built on more than just gold. It has its own secrets, debts, and lethal political machinations.

As unrest in the city crescendos, the tangled web of secrets, spies, and greed ensnares all as the tenuous threads of Casoyan society unravel. For what can you do when all that is hope? Each must choose what it is they truly want in the world, and what they are willing to sacrifice to have it.
